An Italian artist, craftsman, design and architect, Carlo Scarpa lived outside his own time and his designs are strongly connected to the traditions of the artisan. He has as a reference the work of Wright, Garnier and Aalto.

Following his diploma from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, Scarpa began teaching in 1926 at the Istituto Universitario in Venice (IUAV) where he remained until 1977. From 1927 he worked for Cappellin & C. in Murano and from 1933 to 1947, was artist director of the Venini glassworks.

In 1955 began for the Venetian architect an alternating fame and criticism: the magazine “Architettura, cronache e storia” dedicated an entire issue, he received an honorary degree from Olivetti for architecture. In 1956 the first complaint arrived followed by the second in 1963 which forced him to move to Asolo. Only in 1965 was he acquitted. In the same year he received the In/Arch licence for the restoration of Castelvecchio and the gold medal for art and culture from the Pubblica Istruzione.
