Richard Sapper, after having studied philosophy, anatomy, graphics
and engineering, received a degree in Economic Science from the University of
Munich; in 1956 he began working in the design office of Daimler Benz.
In 1958 he moved to Italy,
working first in the studio of Gio Ponti, then with Rinascente and in 1977 as
part of his activity, with Marco Zanuso. From 1970 to 1976 he was a
consultant at Fiat for the design of experimental vehicles and at Pirelli for
pneumatic structures. Since the start of the 1980s he has been a consultant
for IBM Corporation for product design.
Since 1986 he has taught at the Academy
of Fine Arts in Stuttgart,
the Domus Academy
in Milan, the University of Buenos
Aires and the Royal College of Art. Over the
course of his career he has received a number of awards: seven times the
Compasso d’Oro, the award Die Gute Form, the Premio Smau, the BIO gold medal,
the Lucky Strike Designer Award.
