Gio Ponti graduated in architecture from the Politecnico of Milan in 1921 and opened a studio with Mino Fiocchi and Emilio Lancia.
Two years later he made his debut at the first Biennale di Arti Decorative in Monza; from 1923 to 1930 he worked at the Manifattura Ceramica Richard Ginori in Milan and in Sesto Fiorentino.
His named is linked to Domus, of which he was founder and which he edited from 1928 to 1940 and from 1948 to 1979, during the interval between 1941 and 1947 he was editor of the magazine Stile.

In 1934 he received the "Premio per le Arti" at the Accademia d’Italia.
In 1933 up until 1945 was partner in the studio Ponti-Fornaroli-Soncini, from 1952 in association with Alberto Rosselli.
From 1936 to 1961 he was professor at the Facoltà di Architettura at the Politecnico of Milan.
In 1956 he received the Gran Premio Nazionale Compasso d’Oro, in 1968 an honorary degree from the Royal College of Art and the Gold Medal of Academy of Architecture of France in Paris.
