1903 – 1999 Paris, France

After studying at the École de l’Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (1920-25), Charlotte Perriand’s career was marked by a close collaboration with Le Corbusier which lasted from 1927 to1937. Together they produced a collection of furniture which were to become twentieth century icons, “Équipement de l’habitation”. With Jeanneret they founded the Union des Artistes Modernes in 1929.

Her work extended from 1940 to prefabricated buildings in aluminium, designed in the architectural practice set up by Jean Prouvé. After a period in Japan working as a consultant in industrial design from 1940 to 1943, back in France in 1946 she returned to designing interiors, buildings and furniture both individually and in collaboration with others throughout the fifties and sixties.
As well as being involved in many international exhibitions, Perriand worked for the Ministry for French Culture during the eighties and was a consultant for the furniture producer Cassina, who relaunched her furniture in tubular steel created during the twenties and thirties. In 1985 the Musée des Arts Décoratifs held an important exhibition of her work.
